Story Behind The Song
Released in 1985, “Don Quixote” was the third and final single from Nik Kershaw’s second studio album, The Riddle. Written by Kershaw and produced by Peter Collins, the song continued the sophisticated synth-pop style that had become closely associated with the singer-songwriter during the mid-1980s. The track combined polished electronic production with Kershaw’s thoughtful and often playful approach to songwriting.
Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ famous fictional knight, the song uses Don Quixote as a metaphor for someone who continues to pursue impossible dreams despite the obstacles standing in his way. Kershaw’s lyrics cleverly capture the character’s idealism and determination, while also reflecting on the sometimes unrealistic ambitions that can shape our own lives. There is humour within the song, but also a more thoughtful message about refusing to give up on dreams.
Musically, “Don Quixote” features bright synthesiser melodies, programmed percussion, layered keyboards and melodic guitar, creating a polished and energetic arrangement. Kershaw’s distinctive vocal gives the recording its personality, moving effortlessly between the conversational verses and memorable chorus. Peter Collins’ production provides the crisp, spacious sound that characterised much of Kershaw’s work during this period.
“Don Quixote” remains a fine example of Nik Kershaw’s ability to combine intelligent lyrics with highly accessible pop songwriting. Its imaginative subject matter, memorable melody and unmistakable 1980s production make it a particularly enjoyable track from The Riddle and an enduring favourite among fans of Kershaw’s music.
The song peaked at No. 10 in the UK charts on 17th August 1985.

SONG LYRICS
Your mind can play tricks
Makes you what you want to be
Just like superheroes
You saw them on TV
Coast to coast, wall to wall
Got to go, duty calls
Here I am (Here I am)
Superman, Lois Lane
Saved the world, back again
Here I am
In my old, red saloon
I’m a knight in shining armor
If I were asleep, man
I couldn’t be much calmer
Hit the road, on the run
Faster than anyone
Here I am, oh
One for all, all for one
Shake the fist, shoot the gun
Here I am
Don Quixote
What do you say?
Are we proud, are we brave or just crazy?
Don Quixote
What do you say?
Are we shouting at windmills like you?
Common sense is as good
As a cafe on the moon
When man and machinery come to their high noon
Radio on the blink
Kick the cat, hit the drink
Here I am
Beat the clock, punch the wall
Fix’d in no time at all
Here I am
Don Quixote
What do you say?
Are we proud, are be brave or just crazy?
Don Quixote
What do you say?
Are we shooting at windmills like you?
Here I am
Don Quixote
We’re all Men of La Mancha
