Story Behind The Song

Released in 1989 as the first single from Violator, “Personal Jesus” marked a striking evolution in Depeche Mode’s sound, combining electronic programming with blues, rock and a distinctive stomping rhythm. Written by Martin Gore and produced by the band with Flood, the track was recorded at Logic Studios in Milan, with François Kevorkian responsible for the final mix.

The song was inspired partly by Priscilla Presley’s book Elvis and Me, particularly the idea of a lover becoming a source of devotion, guidance and emotional dependence. Gore used this relationship as a metaphor for the way people can assume almost god-like importance in one another’s lives. The lyrics deliberately blur religious and sexual imagery, giving the song its provocative character.

Musically, “Personal Jesus” was built around a blues-inspired guitar riff, Kraftwerk-influenced synthesizers and a heavy rhythmic stomp. Alan Wilder recalled that the central stomp was created by recording members of the band jumping on flight cases, giving the rhythm an unusually physical quality.

Anton Corbijn’s memorable video transported the band to the Tabernas Desert in Spain, presenting them in a stylised Wild West setting. The combination of striking imagery and the song’s raw, confident sound helped make “Personal Jesus” one of Depeche Mode’s most recognisable recordings.

The song peaked at No. 13 in the UK charts on 16th September 1989.

SONG LYRICS

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown and you’re all alone
Flesh and bone by the telephone
Lift up the receiver, I’ll make you a believer
Take second best, put me to the test
Things on your chest you need to confess
I will deliver, you know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown and you’re all alone
Flesh and bone by the telephone
Lift up the receiver, I’ll make you a believer
I will deliver, you know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
(Reach out, reach out)
Reach out and touch faith
