Story Behind The Song

Few songs capture the sheer exuberance of early-Eighties pop quite like “Making Your Mind Up”. Released in 1981, it was the debut single by Bucks Fizz, combining a bright, instantly memorable melody with a brisk rhythm, tightly arranged vocals and an irresistibly catchy chorus. Written by Andy Hill and John Danter and produced by Hill, the song was built for maximum pop impact, with its repeated title phrase providing the perfect singalong hook.

The lyrics are essentially a playful plea for someone to stop hesitating and make a decision about a relationship. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak or uncertainty, the song treats romantic indecision with a light-hearted sense of urgency. The cheerful production and tightly blended harmonies give it an exuberant, feel-good quality that became central to Bucks Fizz’s appeal.

The group had only been formed shortly before the song was recorded, bringing together Cheryl Baker, Bobby G, Jay Aston and Mike Nolan. Nolan’s spontaneous “Here we go!” became part of the finished recording, adding another memorable touch to its already colourful arrangement.

The song became equally famous for its choreographed performance, particularly the dramatic removal of the women’s long skirts to reveal shorter outfits underneath. It was a wonderfully theatrical touch that complemented the song’s bright, uncomplicated energy.

“Making Your Mind Up” remains a quintessential piece of early-Eighties British pop, packed with melody, personality and pure showbusiness.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 18th April 1981.

SONG LYRICS

You gotta speed it up and then you gotta slow it down
‘Cause if you believe that our love can hit the top you gotta play around
But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up

You gotta turn it on and then you gotta put it out
You gotta be sure that it’s something everybody’s gonna talk about
Before you decide that the times arrived
For making your mind up

Don’t let your indecision take you from behind
Trust your inner vision
Don’t let others change your mind

And then you really gotta burn it up and make another fly by night
Get a run for your money and take a chance and it’ll turn out right
And when you can see how it’s gotta be
You’re making your mind up

And try to look as if you don’t care less but if you want to see some more
Bending the rules of the game will let you find the one you’re looking for
And then you can show that you think you know
You’re making your mind up

Don’t let your indecision, take you from behind
Trust your inner vision
Don’t let others change your mind

You gotta speed it up and then you gotta slow it down
‘Cause if you believe that our love can hit the top you gotta play around
But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up
You gotta speed it up and then you gotta slow it down
‘Cause if you believe that our love can hit the top you gotta play around
But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up
For making your mind up
For making your mind up
For making your mind up
