Soft CellSoft Cell are an iconic English synth-pop duo formed in Leeds in 1977 by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. Combining gritty, avant-garde electronic production with Almond’s dramatic, soulful vocals, they explored the dark underbelly of nightlife. They achieved global superstardom in 1981 with their synth-driven cover of Gloria Jones’s “Tainted Love”, which topped charts worldwide and broke longevity records in the US. Their platinum debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, spawned further classic hits like “Bedsitter” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”. Despite a 1984 split, their boundary-pushing sound left a massive legacy, leading to later triumphs.
