Stevie WonderIn the 1980s, Stevie Wonder entered a highly successful “commercial period,” achieving unprecedented global fame. Shifting from his experimental 1970s style, he embraced massive pop hits. He scored iconic number-one singles, including the 1982 Paul McCartney duet “Ebony and Ivory” and 1984’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” from The Woman in Red, which won him an Academy Award. Beyond music, Wonder was a passionate activist. His 1980 track “Happy Birthday” spearheaded the successful campaign to establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a US federal holiday. He capped the decade with a 1989 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
