The PretendersThe Pretenders entered the 1980s as a dominant force in new wave and rock, spearheaded by frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. Their 1980 self-titled debut and follow-up Pretenders II launched them to global stardom with hits like “Brass In Pocket” and “Talk of the Town.” Despite the tragic drug-related deaths of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon in 1982 and 1983, Hynde remarkably rebuilt the band. They returned with the landmark 1984 album Learning to Crawl, featuring timeless anthems “Back on the Chain Gang” and “2000 Miles.” The decade closed with continued success, including the 1986 pop smash “Don’t Get Me Wrong.”
