Story Behind The Song

Few songs are as closely associated with the spirit of Christmas as Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. Created in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the recording brought together a remarkable collection of British and Irish musicians to raise money for people suffering from famine in Ethiopia.

The song was written and recorded with remarkable speed after Geldof was moved by television reports describing the devastating famine. Ure composed the music and helped shape the arrangement, while Geldof wrote the lyrics. The recording features an extraordinary gathering of voices from the Eighties music scene, including members of Duran Duran, Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Wham!, Ultravox and many others.

Musically, the song begins quietly before gradually building into a large, emotional chorus. Ure’s production combines synthesizers, keyboards, percussion and layered vocals, giving the recording a suitably grand scale. Individual singers are deliberately given short lines, allowing the focus to remain on the collective performance rather than any one artist.

The song’s message contrasts the warmth and abundance associated with Christmas in Britain and Ireland with the desperate conditions faced by those experiencing famine. Some of its imagery has since been criticised as simplistic, but its original purpose was clear: to turn the extraordinary popularity of Eighties pop into practical humanitarian action.

“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” remains a remarkable snapshot of its era, capturing both the optimism of a huge musical collaboration and the determination to make a difference beyond the world of pop.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 15th December 1984.

SONG LYRICS

It’s Christmastime
There’s no need to be afraid
At Christmastime
We let in light and we banish shade

And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmastime

But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmastime
It’s hard, but when you’re having fun

There’s a world outside your window
And it’s a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight, thank God it’s them
Instead of you

And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life (Oh)
Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all? (Oh)

Here’s to you, raise a glass for everyone
Here’s to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
Feed the world (Let them know it’s Christmastime again)
