Story Behind The Song
Released in 1986, “Absolute Beginners” was David Bowie’s theme song for Julien Temple’s film of the same name, set against the vibrant world of late-1950s London. Written and performed by Bowie, the song was produced with Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley and featured an impressive group of musicians, including guitarist Kevin Armstrong, bassist Matthew Seligman, drummer Neil Conti and keyboard player Rick Wakeman.
The song is a heartfelt declaration of new love, capturing the excitement and nervousness of two people discovering a relationship together. Bowie presents the idea of being inexperienced not as a weakness, but as something honest and liberating. His vocal performance is warm and passionate, gradually building towards the song’s expansive, highly memorable chorus.
Musically, “Absolute Beginners” combines pop, soul and orchestral influences with a sophisticated arrangement. Rick Wakeman’s expressive piano provides one of the track’s most recognisable musical elements, while saxophones, percussion, guitar, bass and backing vocals give the recording considerable depth. The arrangement builds steadily, transforming the intimate subject matter into something grand and cinematic.
The song also holds a special place in Bowie’s 1980s catalogue because of its connection with film. Bowie not only supplied the title song but also appeared in the movie as the character Vendice Partners. Although the film itself received a mixed reception, the song has endured as one of Bowie’s most romantic and emotionally direct recordings of the decade.
“Absolute Beginners” remains a beautifully crafted example of Bowie’s ability to combine sophisticated musicianship with an accessible, deeply human song about love, uncertainty and new beginnings.
The song peaked at No. 02 in the UK charts on 22nd March 1986.

SONG LYRICS
I’ve nothing much to offer
There’s nothing much to take
I’m an absolute beginner
But I’m absolutely sane
As long as we’re together
The rest can go to hell
I absolutely love you
But we’re absolute beginners
With eyes completely open
But nervous all the same
If our love song
Could fly over mountains
Could laugh at the ocean
Just like the films
There’s no reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
It’s absolutely true
Nothing much could happen
Nothing we can’t shake
Oh, we’re absolute beginners
With nothing much at stake
As long as you’re still smiling
There’s nothing more I need
I absolutely love you
But we’re absolute beginners
But if my love is your love
We’re certain to succeed
If our love song
Could fly over mountains
We’d sail over heartaches
Just like the films
If there’s reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
It’s absolutely true
