Story Behind The Song

Few songs captured the warmth and optimism of late-Eighties acoustic pop quite like Fairground Attraction’s “Perfect”. Written by guitarist Mark Nevin and sung by Eddi Reader, the song combines a gentle folk influence with a lively rhythmic feel, creating something that sounds both timeless and unmistakably rooted in its era.

The lyrics celebrate the excitement of finding a relationship that feels genuine and uncomplicated. Rather than promising extravagant romance, the narrator is delighted by the simple things that make being with someone feel right. There is a playful confidence running through the words, balanced by an affectionate sense of vulnerability.

The arrangement is deliberately free of heavy production. Acoustic guitar provides much of the musical foundation, while bass, drums and accordion add warmth and movement. Reader’s distinctive voice is central to the recording, sounding intimate and conversational in the verses before opening up during the memorable chorus. The combination gives the song an almost live, spontaneous quality.

Fairground Attraction’s musicianship is particularly important to the recording’s charm. The band avoided the synthesised polish that dominated much Eighties pop, instead creating a sound built around organic instruments and carefully arranged performances.

“Perfect” remains an enduring example of how a simple melody, an honest lyric and a beautifully natural performance can create something genuinely memorable. Its warmth, humour and lack of pretension give the song an appeal that extends far beyond the period in which it was recorded.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 14th May 1988.

SONG LYRICS

I don’t want half-hearted love affairs
I need someone who really cares
Life is too short to play silly games
I’ve promised myself I won’t do that again

It’s got to be perfect
It’s got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second best
Well I won’t take anything less
It’s got to be, yeah, perfect

Young hearts are foolish, they make such mistakes
They’re much too eager to give their love away
Well, I have been foolish too many times
Now I’m determined, I’m gonna get it right

It’s got to be perfect
It’s got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second best
Well I won’t take anything less
It’s got to be, yeah, perfect

Young hearts are foolish, they make such mistakes
They’re much too eager to give their love away
Well, I have been foolish too many times
Now I’m determined, I’m gonna get it right

It’s got to be perfect
It’s got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second best
Well I won’t take anything less
It’s got to be, yeah, perfect
It’s got to be, yeah, worth it
It’s got to be perfect
