Fern Kinney – Together We Are Beautiful

Fern Kinney’s “Together We Are Beautiful” is a warm, soulful recording that celebrates love, acceptance and the strength of a relationship built on looking beyond outward appearances. Originally written by Ken Leray and recorded by Frankie Valli in 1976, the song was given a fresh interpretation by American singer Fern Kinney in 1980.

Kinney’s version brings a gentle disco influence to the composition, combining a steady rhythm with lush backing vocals and a smooth, expressive lead performance. Her delivery is both tender and assured, allowing the song’s reassuring message to take centre stage. Rather than presenting love as something dependent on perfection, the lyrics suggest that two people can find beauty in one another through understanding, affection and mutual acceptance.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Kinney had already gained experience as a vocalist, including work with the group the Poppies, before developing her solo career. Her musical style drew on the rich traditions of American soul and R&B, while embracing the polished production associated with the late 1970s disco era.

“Together We Are Beautiful” became closely associated with the romantic, feel-good side of the period’s popular music. Its enduring appeal lies in its simple but meaningful sentiment: genuine love is not about meeting an ideal, but about recognising something special in another person. Kinney’s recording delivers that message with warmth, sincerity and an unmistakably soulful touch.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 15th March 1980.
