Story Behind The Song
Few songs capture the bright, bubblegum optimism of late-Eighties pop quite as instantly as “I Should Be So Lucky”. Released in 1987 and later included on Kylie Minogue’s debut album, Kylie, the song was written and produced by the celebrated Stock Aitken Waterman team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Its combination of sparkling synthesizers, programmed drums, catchy guitar and repetitive vocal hooks created the quintessential PWL pop sound.
The lyrics describe a young woman imagining an ideal romance while acknowledging that her dream lover has yet to appear. The contrast between romantic fantasy and reality gives the song its playful charm, with Kylie delivering the words in an innocent, conversational style that suited her emerging pop persona.
The circumstances behind the recording are almost as remarkable as the finished song. Stock and Aitken had not been expecting Kylie when she arrived at the studio in London and were forced to create something quickly. The basic song was written in around forty minutes, while Kylie recorded her vocals in less than an hour before returning to Australia and her work on Neighbours.
The result was an extraordinarily efficient piece of pop craftsmanship: simple, infectious and instantly recognisable. “I Should Be So Lucky” helped establish Kylie as a major Eighties pop personality and became an enduring example of the polished, synthesised sound associated with Stock Aitken Waterman.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 20th April 1988.

SONG LYRICS
In my imagination, there is no complication
I dream about you all the time
In my mind a celebration, the sweetest of sensation
Thinking you could be mine
In my imagination, there is no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand, I’m dreaming
You fell in love with me
Like I’m in love with you
But dreaming’s all I do
If only they’d come true
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
I should be so lucky in love
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
I should be so lucky in love
It’s a crazy situation, you always keep me waiting
Because it’s only make believe
And I would come a-runnin’ to give you all my loving
If one day you would notice me
My heart is close to breaking, and I can’t go on faking
The fantasy that you’ll be mine, I’m dreaming
That you’re in love with me
Like I’m in love with you
But dreaming’s all I do
If only they’d come true
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
I should be so lucky in love
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
I should be so lucky in love
I should be so lucky
I should be so lucky
I, I (Yeah)
I should be so lucky
I should be so lucky
I-I, I-I-I, I-I, I-I-I (Yeah)
In my imagination, there is no hesitation
We walk together hand in hand, I’m dreaming
That you’re in love with me
Like I’m in love with you
But dreaming’s all I do
If only they’d come true
I should be so lucky, lucky (Lucky, lucky, lucky)
I should be so lucky in love (In love)
I should be so lucky, so lucky (Lucky, lucky, lucky)
I should be so lucky in love (Yeah)
I should be so lucky, so lucky (Lucky, lucky, lucky)
I should be so lucky in love (In love)
I should be so lucky, so lucky (Lucky, lucky, lucky)
I should be so lucky in love (Yeah)
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
I should be so lucky in love (In love)
I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
