Story Behind The Song

Few songs capture romantic longing with quite the same sense of quiet drama as Lionel Richie’s “Hello”. Written and produced by Richie, the song appeared on his second solo album, Can’t Slow Down, and became one of his most recognisable ballads. Its restrained arrangement gives the emotional weight of the song to Richie’s warm, expressive vocal.

“Hello” centres on unrequited love and the uncertainty of wondering whether someone feels the same way. The narrator imagines a relationship with a woman he cannot quite approach, repeatedly questioning whether she might share his feelings. The simplicity of the central idea gives the song its universal appeal, while Richie’s delivery gradually builds from hesitant reflection towards a more impassioned declaration.

The arrangement is deliberately understated, with piano providing the foundation alongside synthesised textures, percussion and carefully placed orchestral elements. Rather than overwhelming the vocal, the production leaves plenty of space for the melody and lyrics to breathe.

The accompanying video added another dimension to the song’s story, following a drama involving a teacher and a visually impaired student who is studying sculpture. Its cinematic approach helped reinforce the themes of loneliness, affection and emotional connection.

With its memorable piano-led melody and intensely sincere performance, “Hello” became a defining example of Lionel Richie’s ability to turn straightforward romantic sentiment into an emotionally powerful pop ballad.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 24th March 1984.

SONG LYRICS

I’ve been alone with you inside my mind
And in my dreams, I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times
I sometimes see you pass outside my door

Hello, is it me you’re looking for?
I can see it in your eyes
I can see it in your smile
You’re all I’ve ever wanted
And my arms are open wide
‘Cause you know just what to say
And you know just what to do
And I want to tell you so much
I love you

I long to see the sunlight in your hair
And tell you time and time again how much I care
Sometimes, I feel my heart will overflow

Hello, I’ve just got to let you know
‘Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely?
Or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you

Hello, is it me you’re looking for?
‘Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely?
Or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you
