Story Behind The Song
There is something wonderfully warm and hopeful about Paul McCartney’s “Pipes Of Peace”. Written by McCartney and produced by George Martin, the song became the title track of his 1983 album and carries a simple message that feels just as heartfelt today: if people could put aside their differences and choose understanding, the world could be a better place.
The song grew from McCartney’s desire to write something with a universal message. Its lyrics use simple, almost childlike imagery, but beneath that simplicity lies a serious plea for peace, compassion and togetherness. The recurring image of the “pipes of peace” gives the song an almost storybook quality, suggesting music as something capable of bringing people together.
Musically, McCartney surrounds himself with a rich but gentle Eighties arrangement of keyboards, synthesizers, percussion and orchestral touches. His familiar, slightly vulnerable vocal keeps the performance personal, preventing the message from becoming overly grand or preachy.
The accompanying video adds an especially touching dimension. Set around the Christmas Truce of 1914, it shows British and German soldiers putting aside their differences to meet in no-man’s-land, play football and share a brief moment of humanity.
“Pipes Of Peace” is ultimately a very McCartney-like song: melodic, sincere and optimistic. Its message is uncomplicated, but that is part of its charm. Sometimes the simplest wish — for people to live together peacefully — is also the most powerful.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 8th January 1984.

SONG LYRICS
I light a candle to our love
In love our problems disappear
But all in all, we’ll soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear
All around the world
Little children being born to the world
Got to give them all we can ’til the war is won
Then will the work be done?
Help them to learn (Help them to learn)
Songs of joy instead of “burn, baby, burn” (Burn, baby, burn)
Let us show them how to play the pipes of peace
Play the pipes of peace
Help me to learn
Songs of joy instead of “burn, baby, burn”
Won’t you show me how to play (How to play)
The pipes of peace? (Pipes of peace)
Play the pipes of peace
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
What do you say? (Do you say)
Will the human race be run in a day? (In a day)
Or will someone save this planet we’re playing on?
Is it the only one?
What are we going to do?
Help them to see (Help them to see)
That the people here are like you and me (Like you and me)
Let us show them how to play (How to play)
The pipes of peace (Pipes of peace)
Play the pipes of peace
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I light a candle to our love
In love our problems disappear
But all in all, we soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear
