Story Behind The Song

Released in 1983, “The First Picture Of You” was the debut single from Liverpool band The Lotus Eaters and was later included on their debut album, No Sense Of Sin. Written by Peter Coyle, Jeremy Kelly and Gerard Quinn, the song was produced by Nigel Gray, whose previous work with The Police and Siouxsie & The Banshees helped shape its delicate, atmospheric sound.

The song is a beautifully wistful reflection on young love, memory and the lingering emotions attached to a particular image of someone. Coyle’s plaintive vocal sits above shimmering guitar, keyboards and an understated rhythm section, creating a sound that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive. The arrangement has a gentle, almost dreamlike quality, perfectly complementing the song’s romantic and nostalgic lyrics.

The track had already been recorded for a John Peel session in 1982, before the band had secured a record deal. The studio version was recorded at Surrey Sound Studios in Leatherhead, with respected session bassist Alan Spenner contributing to the recording.

The accompanying video, filmed around Walberswick in Suffolk, reinforced the song’s summery, romantic atmosphere with seaside imagery. With its chiming guitars, elegant melody and softly melancholic vocal, “The First Picture Of You” remains one of the most evocative examples of sophisticated British pop from the early Eighties.

The song peaked at No. 15 in the UK singles chart on 20th August 1983.

SONG LYRICS

It’s warm in and out
The pulse of flowing love
Spread the calm to meet the others
Pleasure fills with love ’til dawn

It’s warm in and out
The call for sacred hours
The soft chant of new-born singing
The magic force of your feelings

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

Can’t lose this mood gentle
With summer at our ears
Flood the world deep in sunlight
Break into the peaceful wild

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The first picture of you
The first picture of summer
Seeing the flowers scream their joy
