Story Behind The Song

Few songs combine romantic drama and grand Eighties atmosphere quite like T’Pau’s “China In Your Hand”. Written by Carol Decker and Ron Rogers, the song was produced by Ron Rogers and Tim Burgess and became one of the defining recordings from T’Pau’s debut album, Bridge Of Spies.

The song’s title and imagery were inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, particularly the idea of creating something wonderful only to discover that it can become dangerous or uncontrollable. Decker uses the story as a metaphor for a relationship, exploring love, ambition and the fear that something precious can be damaged by trying to hold onto it too tightly.

Musically, “China In Your Hand” is built around a dramatic arrangement that gradually expands from its quieter passages into a powerful, emotionally charged chorus. Layered keyboards, electric guitars, bass and drums provide an increasingly dense backdrop, while Decker’s distinctive vocal moves from intimate reflection to soaring intensity.

One of the recording’s greatest strengths is its sense of scale. Rather than relying solely on a conventional pop structure, the arrangement continually builds tension, allowing the emotional impact of the chorus to feel almost cinematic. Decker’s delivery gives the song both vulnerability and strength, perfectly matching its themes of love and uncertainty.

“China In Your Hand” remains a striking example of ambitious Eighties pop-rock, combining literary inspiration, memorable songwriting and a commanding vocal performance into a song that feels both dramatic and deeply personal.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 14th November 1987.

SONG LYRICS

It was a theme she had
On a scheme he had
Told in a foreign land
To take life on earth
To the second birth
And the man was in command
It was a flight on the wings
Of a young girl’s dreams
That flew too far away

Don’t push too far your dreams are china in your hand
Don’t wish too hard because they may come true
And you can’t help them
You don’t know what you might have set upon yourself
China in your hand

Come from greed
Never born of the seed
Took a life from a barren hand
Oh eyes wide
Like a child in the form of man
A prophecy for a fantasy
The curse of a vivid mind

Don’t push too far your dreams are china in your hand
Don’t wish too hard because they may come true
And you can’t help them
You don’t know what you might have set upon yourself
China in your hand
Whoa your hand
Your hand

Don’t push too far your dreams are china in your hand
Don’t wish too hard because they may come true
And you can’t help them
You don’t know what you might have set upon yourself
But you shouldn’t push too hard no no

Don’t push too far your dreams are china in your hand
Don’t wish too hard because they may come true
and you can’t help them
You don’t know what you might have set upon yourself
Because they’re only dreams
And you shouldn’t push too hard no no
