Story Behind The Song
Few songs have travelled through so many musical styles as “Everything I Own”, and Boy George’s version brought a distinctly soulful reggae character to the familiar composition. Originally written by David Gates and recorded by Bread in 1972, the song was transformed by George for his 1987 solo album Sold, produced by Stewart Levine.
The lyrics express deep grief and longing for someone who is no longer present, with the narrator reflecting on the love and security that person provided. Although often interpreted simply as a romantic song, Gates originally wrote it about his father, giving the emotional weight of the lyrics an added dimension.
Boy George’s interpretation moves away from the soft-rock intimacy of the original and embraces a relaxed reggae-influenced arrangement. The rhythm has a gentle, swaying quality, while keyboards, bass and percussion create a warm backdrop for his expressive vocal. George avoids simply imitating the original recording, instead giving the melody a more conversational and emotionally exposed delivery.
The production reflects George’s long-standing connection with reggae, something that had been central to Culture Club’s music. His voice, capable of sounding both vulnerable and commanding, suits the song particularly well, especially during the quieter passages where the sense of loss becomes most apparent.
“Everything I Own” demonstrates how a familiar song can acquire an entirely different emotional character through a new arrangement and vocal interpretation, while retaining the simplicity and sincerity that made the original so memorable.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 14th March 1987.

SONG LYRICS
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm
Kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free
You set me free
Of all the years I ever knew
Those finer ones I spent with you
And I would give everything I own!
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again!
You taught me how to cry
I don’t know, why?
Just don’t know, why?
You gave my life to me
You set me free
You set me free
Of all the years I ever knew
Those finer ones I spent with you
And I would give everything I own!
Give up my life
My heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you
Back again
Just to hold you
Once again!
If there’s someone you know
That won’t let you go
And taking it all for granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don’t hear a word they say
I would give everything I own!
Give up my life
My heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you
Back again
Just to hold you
Once again!
I would give everything I own!
Give up my life
My heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you
Back again
Just to hold you once again
Once again!
