Story Behind The Song
Bucks Fizz’s “The Land Of Make Believe” is one of the most distinctive examples of early-Eighties British pop, combining an accessible melody with an imaginative lyric that carries a deeper message. Released in 1981, the song was written by Andy Hill and Peter Sinfield, with Hill also responsible for the production. Sinfield’s background as a lyricist for progressive rock group King Crimson brought an unusual literary dimension to the group’s otherwise polished pop sound.
The lyrics construct a surreal fantasy world in which childhood innocence and escapism conceal more unsettling ideas about authority, control and manipulation. Although the song can be enjoyed as an engaging piece of pop storytelling, its imagery also invites a more critical interpretation. The mysterious figure of the Pied Piper, in particular, suggests the dangers of blindly following those who promise an idealised world.
Musically, the recording is built around a strong melodic hook, crisp percussion, synthesizers and guitars, with the contrasting voices of Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan, Bobby G and Jay Aston contributing to its carefully balanced vocal arrangement. The production is bright and dynamic, maintaining an upbeat character while allowing the lyrics’ more ambiguous themes to emerge.
The accompanying promotional video reinforced the song’s fantastical atmosphere through theatrical costumes and surreal imagery. “The Land Of Make Believe” remains a notable recording in Bucks Fizz’s catalogue, demonstrating how commercial pop could combine immediate appeal with thoughtful and enduring lyrical ideas.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 16th January 1982.

SONG LYRICS
Stars in your eyes, little one
Where do you go to dream
To a place, we all know
The land of make believe
Shadows tapping at your window
Ghostly voices whisper: “Will you come and play?”
Not for all the tea in China
Or the corn in Carolina
Never, never ever
They’re running after you, babe
Run for the sun little one
You’re an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He’ll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Something nasty in your garden’s waiting
Patiently, till it can have your heart
Try to go but it won’t let you
Don’t you know it’s out to get you running
Keep on running
They’re running after you, babe
Run for the sun, little one
You’re an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He’ll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Your world is turning
From night to day
Your dream is burning far, far away
Into the blue, you and I
To the circus in the sky
Captain Kidd’s on the sand
With the treasure close at hand
In the land of make believe
In the land of make believe
Run for the sun, little one
You’re an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He’ll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
Run for the sun, little one
You’re an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He’ll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe
I’ve got a friend who comes to tea
And no-one else can see but me
He came today but had to go
To visit you?
Ya never know
Written By Andy Hill, Peter Sinfield
