Story Behind The Song

Kraftwerk’s “The Model” is a defining example of the German group’s ability to transform minimalist electronic music into something both accessible and subtly unsettling. Originally released in 1978 on their album The Man-Machine, the song reflects the band’s fascination with technology, modern life and the increasingly artificial nature of celebrity and popular culture.

Written by Ralf Hütter, Emil Schult and Karl Bartos, with lyrics by Hütter, the song centres on a glamorous fashion model whose public image conceals a more distant, elusive personality. The narrator is captivated by her appearance and status, observing her world from the outside. Beneath its seemingly straightforward subject, the song offers a cool, detached perspective on beauty, image and the commercial machinery surrounding fame.

Musically, “The Model” is built around a simple, memorable synthesizer melody, a precise electronic rhythm and a restrained vocal performance. Kraftwerk avoid the elaborate arrangements associated with conventional pop, allowing repetition and carefully controlled textures to create the track’s distinctive atmosphere. Its mechanical precision mirrors the artificial world described in the lyrics, while the melody gives the recording an unexpected warmth.

The song’s influence extended well beyond its original release, helping establish the synthesizer as a central instrument in modern pop and electronic music. With its economical arrangement, understated humour and sharp observations of image-driven culture, “The Model” remains one of Kraftwerk’s most enduring and influential recordings. The song was re-released as an AA single with the song “Computer Love”.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 6th February 1982.

SONG LYRICS

She’s a model and she’s looking good
I’d like to take her home, that’s understood
She plays hard to get, she smiles from time to time
It only takes a camera to change her mind

She’s going out to nightclubs, drinking just champagne
And she has been checking nearly all the men
She’s playing her game and you can hear them say
“She is looking good, for beauty, we will pay”

She’s posing for consumer products now and then
For every camera, she gives the best she can
I saw her on the cover of a magazine
Now she’s a big success, I want to meet her again

Written By Hutter, Bartos, Schult
