Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984 and again in 1985, “Love & Pride” was the debut single by Coventry band King and appeared on their first album, Steps In Time. Written by vocalist Paul King and keyboard player Mick Roberts, and produced by Richard James Burgess, the song blends new wave with funk, pop and soul influences. Its bright, rhythmic arrangement, prominent bass and energetic keyboards give it an unmistakably Eighties feel, while Paul King’s distinctive vocal delivery provides much of its character.

The lyrics centre on the uplifting qualities of love, individuality and emotional confidence. Lines about finding “all colours” rather than seeing things simply in black and white give the song an optimistic, inclusive quality, while the repeated title phrase provides its memorable hook. Rather than presenting love as something complicated or tragic, King treats it as a source of energy, hope and inspiration.

The production is particularly lively, with Burgess, who also played drums on the recording, helping to create the punchy rhythmic foundation. The band’s visual identity was equally distinctive, with Paul King’s flamboyant clothes, hairstyle and famously customised Doc Martens contributing to their colourful Eighties image.

“Love & Pride” remains a spirited example of British pop at its most colourful, combining funk-driven rhythm, catchy songwriting and an unmistakable sense of optimism.

The song peaked at No. 02 in the UK singles chart on the 9th February 1985.

SONG LYRICS

That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride

Start your journey, early or maybe later
(Get your boots on)
Look for rainbows (It’s cloudy)
Take your hair dryer, blow them all away

In you, I’ve found a story I want to keep hearing
In you, I see all colours, not just black or white
In you, I find a reason and hope for all dreamers
You are my fill, you’re my supply of love and pride

That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and p-p-p-p-pride

Knowing, sensing, seeing, eating, sleeping
(That’s just being)
Touchin’, testin’
Lovin’, wantin’ and taking more love and more pride

In you, I’ve found a story I want to keep hearing
In you, I see all colours, not just black or white
In you, I find a reason and hope for all dreamers
You are my fill, you’re my supply of love and pride

That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride

Ah-oh-oh-oh-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-oh
Ah-oh-oh-oh-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-oh
I’m taking it ’round the world (World)
The world (I’m takin’ it ’round the world)
Some love and pride

That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
I said that’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride
That’s what my heart yearns for now
Love and pride, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
