Story Behind The Song

Few songs of the late Eighties carried such a powerful sense of place and emotion as “Belfast Child”. Released in 1989 and later included on the album Street Fighting Years, the song was written by Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchill and Mick MacNeil around the traditional Irish melody of “She Moved Through The Fair”. Produced by Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson, it marked a more reflective and atmospheric direction for Simple Minds.

The song was deeply influenced by the violence and suffering of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Kerr heard the melody shortly after the Enniskillen bombing of November 1987 and was moved to write lyrics expressing the grief, sadness and emptiness experienced by people affected by the conflict. Rather than offering political slogans, the song focuses on human loss and the longing for something better.

Musically, “Belfast Child” gradually unfolds from its haunting folk-inspired opening into an expansive arrangement featuring acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, violin, percussion, tin whistle and bodhrán. The extended instrumental passages give the recording an almost cinematic quality, while Kerr’s restrained vocal adds to its solemn atmosphere.

The result is an unusually spacious and emotionally powerful recording, blending traditional Irish musical influences with Simple Minds’ grand, atmospheric rock sound. “Belfast Child” remains one of the band’s most distinctive and affecting songs, capturing both the darkness of its subject and a sense of hope beyond it.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 25th February 1989.

SONG LYRICS

When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it’s sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it’s offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they’re gonna pull the old town down

One day we’ll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again

Brothers, sisters, where are you now?
As I look for you right through the crowd
All my life here I’ve spent
With my faith in God the Church and the Government
But there’s trouble abound
Some day soon they’re gonna pull the old town down

One day we’ll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again
When the Belfast Child sings again

So come back Billy, won’t you come on home?
Come back Mary, you’ve been away so long
The streets are empty, and your mother’s gone
The girls are crying, it’s been oh so long
And your father’s calling, come on home
Won’t you come on home, won’t you come on home?

Come back people, you’ve been gone a while
And the war is raging, through the Emerald Isle
That’s flesh and blood man, that’s flesh and blood
All the girls are crying but all’s not lost

The streets are empty, the streets are cold
Won’t you come on home, won’t you come on home?

The streets are empty
Life goes on

One day we’ll return here
When the Belfast Child sings again
When the Belfast Child sings again

Written By Traditional, Simple Minds
