The Bangles – Eternal Flame

Few pop ballads of the late Eighties captured the feeling of vulnerable, all-consuming love quite like “Eternal Flame”. Recorded by The Bangles for their 1988 album Everything, the song was written by Susanna Hoffs with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, and gave the group a strikingly softer dimension.

Built around a gentle melody and understated arrangement, the song places Hoffs’ intimate vocal at the centre. Rather than the jangly guitars and energetic harmonies associated with much of The Bangles’ earlier material, “Eternal Flame” unfolds slowly, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, tenderness and longing.
