Story Behind The Song
Released in 1981 as the second single from Japan’s fifth and final studio album, Tin Drum, “Visions Of China” is a striking example of the band’s sophisticated blend of new wave, electronic music and Eastern-inspired textures. Written by David Sylvian and Steve Jansen and produced by Japan with Steve Nye, the track was recorded during the meticulous sessions that produced Tin Drum.
The song reflects Japan’s fascination with Chinese culture and the imagery surrounding the country during the Mao era. Rather than attempting to create a literal portrait of China, Sylvian uses impressionistic lyrics to evoke a world of political imagery, youth, ceremony and imagined landscapes. The result is deliberately ambiguous, leaving the listener to construct their own interpretation.
Musically, the track is driven by Steve Jansen’s intricate percussion, which avoids conventional hi-hat and ride patterns in favour of a more ceremonial, almost martial rhythm. Mick Karn’s distinctive fretless bass provides a fluid counterpoint, while Sylvian and Richard Barbieri created carefully programmed synthesizer sounds to complement the sparse arrangement. Karn also contributes the dida, a Chinese double-reed instrument, adding another unusual colour to the recording.
The accompanying promotional film reinforced the song’s Eastern imagery with Chinese costumes, lion dancing, military references and stylised scenes of the band, making “Visions Of China” a memorable example of Japan’s increasingly adventurous final period.
The song peaked at No. 32 in the UK charts on 14th November 1981.

SONG LYRICS
I’m walking young and strong
But just a little too thin
I may be happy
But I haven’t a clue to this life
In my mind
Stay with me, we could learn to fight
Like every good boy should
Cling to me, we are blacked out
In visions of China tonight
I’m burning heroes again
I never thought of before
I remember the fashion
But don’t have a clue to your life
In my mind
Stay with me, we could learn to fight
Like every good boy should
Cling to me, we are blacked out
In visions of China tonight
We walk backwards, say nothing
My visions of China
We’re young and strong in this party
We’re building our visions of China
We walk backwards, say nothing
My visions of China
We’re young and strong in this party
We’re living our visions of China
We walk backwards, say nothing
My visions of China
We’re young and strong in this party
We’re building our visions of China
Written By D. Sylvian, S. Jansen
